Today Cetis is publishing a white paper exploring how institutions can benefit from MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) within their own provision. This paper by Li Yuan and Stephen Powell follows their popular paper MOOCs and Open Education: Implications for Higher Education published in March 2013. The Beyond MOOCs paper discusses how lessons learned from running MOOCs can be applied within institutions to offer flexible opportunities for learners and new revenue streams. The paper states:
“The key opportunity for institutions is to take the concepts developed by the MOOC experiment to date and use them to improve the quality of their face-to-face and online provision, and to open up access to higher education. Most importantly, the understanding gained should be used to inform diversification strategies including the development of new business models and pedagogic approaches that take full advantage of digital technologies”
Yuan and Powell identify three key themes that universities and colleges could take advantage of: Openness, Revenue Models and Service Disaggregation. As a result of the MOOC movement new opportunities are now available in terms of technology options, pedagogy and also learner choices. The authors discuss how institutions are taking advantage of MOOCs to re-evaluate and reposition their organisations in a variety of ways.
The paper is available from the Cetis publications site:
